Making Chocolate at Planet Cocoa

Whilst Bob’s been hibernating in lock-down, we’ve spent our time finding incredible people who inspire us around how business and doing good can go hand in hand.

Meet Jeanette, the founder of Planet Cocoa, an ethical chocolate label based in Melbourne. 

We spoke to Jeannette about what the most rewarding part is about what she does, why she decided to create a vegan chocolate brand, what the best and worst parts of lock-down and how people can best help support.

Tell us a little about you

I moved to Melbourne 6 years ago from Adelaide to chase my dream of being a pastry chef. I was the head pastry chef at a leading catering company but after being stood down due to COVID, I chose to use that newly-found free time to pursue Planet Cocoa. This was just a little idea I had for the past 2 years but never had time to get started due to working 50-hour work weeks in the kitchen.

Most rewarding part of what you do?

Hearing feedback from customers that they loved what they tried and even that the handwritten cards placed with each online order had made their days. 


Why vegan?

Our mantra is that treating yourself shouldn't cost the earth with a big focus on the environmental impact of packaging, so it made sense to make a product without using animal products. We'd love to change people's minds that you don't need dairy products or even be vegan to enjoy our chocolate. 

How can people best help?

It goes beyond ordering and spending your money chocolate (which we're very grateful for!). You can support small businesses in free ways such as: engaging in social media posts, re-sharing posts with friends, word of mouth is still such a powerful tool you can do without a marketing degree. 😉 


Best and worst part of lock down?

Worst - being separated from our interstate family and not knowing when we'll see them, also postponing my wedding/honeymoon.

Best - having the time to slow down and focus on doing things that have been pending like starting a home veggie garden, go cycling, read more, being more intentional about checking in with friends.
